It's time to go green! Here are some advantages to switching your fixtures to LED:
Energy costs: The electricity used by a single incandescent lamp costs 5 to 10 times the original purchase price of the lamp itself. LED's are extremely efficient and use only a fraction of the energy of an incandescent. For exmaple, our LED spot light uses only 7 watts of energy compared to a 60 watt incandescent.
Cost effective: Although LEDs are expensive, the cost is recouped over time through energy savings. The best value comes from commercial use where maintenance and replacement costs are expensive.
Efficiency: LED's produce more light per watt than incandescent lamps; this is useful in battery powered or energy-saving devices. LED light lamps use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL) Because these lamps last for years, energy is saved in maintenance and replacement costs. For example, many cities in the US are replacing their incandescent traffic lights with LED arrays because the electricity costs can be reduced by 80% or more.
Cool output: In contrast to most light sources, LED's radiate very little heat in the form of IR that can cause damage to sensitive objects or fabrics. Wasted energy is dispersed as heat through the base of the LED.
Long lasting: LED's can have a relatively long useful life. Estimates are 50,000 to 100,000 hours of useful life, though time to complete failure may be longer. Fluorescent tubes typically are rated at about 10,000 to 15,000 hours, depending partly on the conditions of use, and incandescent light lamps at 1,000–2,000 hours.
No UV Emissions & Little Infrared: LEDs produce no UV radiation and little heat, making them ideal for illuminating objects, such as works of art, that are sensitive to UV light.
Color: LED's can emit light of an intended color without the use of color filters that traditional lighting methods require. This is more efficient and can lower initial costs.
Size: LED's can be very small (smaller than 2 mm) and are easily populated onto printed circuit boards.
On/Off time: LED's light up instantly. A typical red indicator LED will achieve full brightness in microseconds. LED's used in communications devices can have even faster response times.
Silent operation: No more humming or buzzing at the office. LED's do not produce any noise.
Cycling: LED's are ideal for use in applications that are subject to frequent on-off cycling, unlike fluorescent lamps that burn out more quickly when cycled frequently, or HID lamps that require a long time before restarting.
Dimming: LED's can very easily be dimmed either by Pulse-width modulation or lowering the forward current.
Slow failure: LED's predominantly fail by dimming over time, rather than the abrupt burn-out of incandescent lamps.
Durable & shock resistance: LED's, being solid state components, are difficult to damage with external shock, unlike fluorescent and incandescent lamps which are fragile. LEDs are highly rugged. They feature no filament that can be damaged due to shock and vibrations.
Focus: The solid package of the LED can be designed to focus its light. Incandescent and fluorescent sources often require an external reflector to collect light and direct it in a usable manner.
Toxicity: LED's do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps.
